This Months Events

The crocus and daffodils are poking through the winter chill.  Come up and enjoy the most wonderful time of year when the days warm up and the nights are perfect for snuggling by the fire.  Blue Grass is coming to Dillard the 12-14th of March; St. Patrick's Day is the 17th and we will have green eggs and ham, corned beef and cabbage and good Irish Stout.  The end of the month will see warmer temperatures as Spring arrives.  The Chattooga River rafting trips resume in March and the water is amazing with the help of the Spring rains.

In April we will be celebrating Easter with hand dipped chocolates and later in the month we will host a jewelry making workshop with local artists Cecil and Mel Gagliano.   Join us for a month of celebrating Green Living and Earth Day festivities.  The Last weekend of April come enjoy Celebrate Clayton- a juried craft fair.

January:  Snow skiing and snow tubing in the mountains, a great time to get away after the rush of the holidays. Martin Luther King Day makes a perfect three day weekend.
February: A wonderful romantic event for Valentine's weekend .Annual "Fireside Art & Craft Show" at Unicoi State Park; celebrate Valentine's Day with our romantic champagne getaway; Antique auctions start up in Mountain City; Presidents' Day offers a three day get away; see the first signs of Spring in the valley.
March:  Whitewater rafting along the Chattooga starts up with pre- season deals; search for gold at the end of the rainbow on St Patrick's Day at one of the many gem mines and shops.
 
April:  Spring meteor showers can be viewed at Black Rock Mountain Lake; Whitewater Festival at Tallulah Gorge; North GA Art Guild Showcase at Tallulah Falls; Celebrate Clayton Arts & Crafts Fair in Clayton.  Start your Spring with fresh strawberries you pick yourself.  ANNUAL SPRING FARM DAY at Hillside Orchard Farms April 15th.

Fourth Annual Earth Day Kite Festival  Rabun Gap Naccoochee School noon til 4pm. Bring a kite or get one there.  Professional kite flyers  will demonstrate, eco friendly exhibits and lots of fresh air.

Third ANNUAL WILD AND WOOLLY WINE TASTING & AUTHOR-FIDDLER FESTIVAL

ForestWatch 2010 Wild & Woolly Native Plant Sale & Book Festival will be held 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, May 1, at the Sheehan Barn in the Persimmon Community of Rabun County. The site is nestled along Persimmon Creek in a pastoral valley of striking beauty.This annual benefit for Georgia Forest Watch, environmental guardian of our national forests and streams. Capricornids

July 29-30

Frequency:  0-15 per hour
82.4% illumination
The Capricornids are characterized by their often yellow coloration and their frequent brightness. They are also slow interplanetary interlopers, hitting our atmosphere at around 15 miles per second. Though you can expect only 15 meteors per hour at best under dark sky conditions, the Capricornids are noted for producing brilliant fireballs.

This shower produces about 60 meteors per hour, and its performance is farily consistant from year to year.
September:  Rhapsody in Rabun- a "Taste of Rabun" gala;  end the summer with the cool nights in the mountains; Blue Ridge Valley 5K Run; Labor Day events around the area.  Join us for the revival of the Mountaineer festival in Clayton, as well as the Antique car show.
October:  GA Mountain Fair Fall Festival in Hiawassee; Old Time Fiddlers Convention; Foxfire Fall Festival; Annual Halloween Hayday in Clayton; Chili cook-off in Clayton; Octoberfest in Helen; area Fall festivals and pumpkin picking.  Apple picking at area orchards.

Expect a peak rate of 10 meteors per hour under clear, moonless conditions.

Orionids

97.4% illumination
This shower produces a peak rate of 20 yellow and green meteors per hour, which are fast moving at 41.6 miles per second and are known to produce fireballs.

Leonids

Frequency:  31-45 per hour
82.9% illumination
The Leonids are best known for their 33-year peaks, during which 100s of meteors per hour can be observed. The last of these peaks occured in 2001.

 

December:  Christmas Festivities at Tallulah Falls; Christmas Parade in Clayton, cut your tree at local groves; Rabun County Christmas Tour of Homes; open your stockings in the mountains with warm cider.

Geminids

December 13-14

Frequency:  45+ per hour
48.3% illumination
The most reliable meteor shower of the year, the Geminids are characterized by their multi-colored display--65% being white, 26% yellow, and the remaining 9% blue, red and green.

  18TH ANNUAL RABUN COUNTY BOARD OF REALTORS CHRISTMAS TOUR OF HOMES  11 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Rabun County Board of Realtors and all proceeds go towards the Rabun United Christmas Fund.
